Assumption Parish Preschool
Anyone seeking the opportunity to substitute in an Assumption Parish Preschool classroom should attend the upcoming training on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 - at the Head Start Office, 4891 Highway 308, Napoleonville. Training for substitutes will be held from 9 a.m. till noon and is mandatory. In order to be added to the substitute list, you must attend this class.
A cleared criminal background check is required to substitute. Small Business Consulting at Library
Ascension Parish Library offers free small business consulting on the second Wednesday of each month at the library in Donaldsonville located at 500 Mississippi Street. Persons wanting to start or improve a small business receive a private, two-hour consultation designed to provide professional help in areas of financing, marketing, and accounting. This service is sponsored by Ascension Parish Library and is a partnership program with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the Louisiana Department of Economic Development, and the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southern University and A & M College in Baton Rouge. More than 50 parents and educators discussed options for students who attend two west Ascension Parish schools which have been included on the state's list for those that did not meet minimum standards Monday during an informational meeting.
The Ascension Parish school system learned Friday that Donaldsonville High and Lowery Intermediate schools did not meet minimum standards required by the Louisiana Department of Education that is linked to students' performance on standardized tests, attendance and number of dropouts.

The artwork of 46-year-old painter Alvin Batiste of Donaldsonville is celebrated throughout the state for its charm and inspired application.
The E.D. White Historic Site will present Batiste's renowned work in an exhibition forty pieces strong Aug. 15-16.
"The Folk Art of Alvin Batiste" will only be on display for two days, but live painting by Batiste on site enhances the brief celebration.
"The screaming voices of fans is something that I need to hear regularly," says Isaac M. Chatman, a Donaldsonville resident who feels it is a prerequisite to achieve excellence in his musical craft.
"I need to feel that rush and chill down my spine."
Chatman, also known as "Array" on stage, will be taking on the biggest performance of his life on Aug. 15 as he opens for platinum recording artists, Carl Thomas and Keke Wyatt.
Parish rural area residents can expect the possibility of a knock on their doors between Aug. 9 and 17, as representatives from a research firm will pool 400 households to get input on residents' wants for parish recreation services.
The Ascension Parish Council has engaged the research firm Percy & Company of Baton Rouge to conduct a survey of 400 households in the rural areas of the parish. The survey is the lead a planning process for the parish Parks and Recreation Department.
Most consumer purchases for tangible personal property will be exempt from state sales tax during a two-day sales tax holiday Aug. 1 and 2, according to a release from the Louisiana Department of Revenue.
The holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and concludes at midnight Saturday, Aug. 2.
Copies of the proposed revised Ascension Parish Pupil Progression Plan will be available for public viewing at numerous locations throughout the parish, according to a release from Ascension Parish Public Schools.
The plan will be available for viewing at the School Board office, located on Webster Street in Donaldsonville, as well as at Donaldsonville High School, Dutchtown High School, East Ascension High School and St. Amant High School during school hours July 21-Aug. 31.
Ricky Babin, 23rd Judicial District First Assistant District Attorney and lifelong resident of Ascension Parish, recently announced his candidacy for the office of district attorney for the 23rd Judicial District.
The seat is up for election in the Oct. 4 primary election, with any runoff taking place during the Nov. 4 general election.
Charles "Chuck" Long, a Democrat from Donaldsonville, announces that he will be a candidate in the election to become the next District Attorney for Ascension, Assumption, and St. James parishes.
Long, 51, was born and raised in Donaldsonville and said "he has never been political." Instead, Long said he has focused his talents on being a respected prosecutor.
James Boyd of Donaldsonville registers to vote with Ascension Parish Registrar of Voters administrative coordinators Geralyn LeBeouf and Diane Weil Wednesday during a voter education drive at TB Chevron. Registration, address change and party change were offered.
Leroy Sullivan Sr. recently announced he will seek re-election as Mayor of the City of Donaldsonville, a position that he has held for the past four years.
"I humbly and proudly re-submit myself for re-election as your mayor of the city of Donaldsonville," Sullivan said. "I am asking for your continued prayers, vote and support as we continue as a team to make Donaldsonville the very best that it can and will be. Serving you as mayor has been my highest honor. District #1 is located in the City of Donaldsonville and includes an area that is bordered by the Mississippi River on the north, La. 1 on the south, Bayou Lafourche on the east and up to Burns Drive on the west.

Ascension Parish Clerk of Court Kermit Hart Bourque recently announced the dates for qualifying as a candidate for the offices to be voted upon in the Oct. 4 parish and district elections.
Qualifying will be open to candidates Wednesday and Thursday July 9 and 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday, July 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
