Glaviana celebrate 50 years of wedding bliss

Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Glaviana Sr. celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 14. They have four children, Clyde Glaviana Jr., Kevin Glaviana, Tracie Glaviana Poirrier, and Bridgette Glaviana Kocke. They are the grandparents of six grandchildren and one great grandchild. The honorees were married August 14, 1959 at St. James Catholic Church in St. James. The couple celebrated with family and friends by renewing their wedding vows followed by a reception given by their children.

Bell-Robinson

Miss Linda Mae Bell of Belle Rose is pleased to announce the engagement of her daughter Ebony Vonkee Bell to Mr. O'Neil Lathaniel Robinson, son of Edison Robinson Jr. and Dorothy Garnett Robinson. The couple will exchange nuptial vows during a 5 p.m. ceremony on Nov. 1 at St. James United Methodist Church in Belle Rose.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bell Sr. She is a 1997 graduate of Assumption High School and received her bachelor's degree in Rehab Services from Southern University of Baton Rouge in 2001 and obtained a masters degree from Southern University of Baton Rouge in 2007 in Public Administration.
She is employed by Assumption Parish School System as a Special Education Teacher.
The prospective groom is the grandson of Mrs. Leona Garnett of Belle Rose and the late Charlie Garnett Sr., and the late Mr. and Mrs. Edison Robinson Sr.
He is a 1989 graduate of Donaldsonville High School and obtained a bachelor's degree from Southern University of Baton Rouge in Computer Science in 1994. In 2001, he received a master's in Administration Supervision from Southern University. He is employed by Ascension Parish School System as an Assistant Principal at Lowery Intermediate School in Donaldsonville.
 

Bennett-Butler

The late Mr. Marquest Williams of Bertrandville, Ms. Linda Butler of Napoleonville, and grandmother, Mrs. Barbara Skidmore of Bertrandville, are pleased to announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of their daughter, Laquita Domonique Butler to Corey Joseph Bennett. Bennett is the son of Ms. Wanda Bennett and Mr. Patrick Junior of Donaldsonville.
The couple will exchange vows at 5 p.m., Saturday, October 25,2008 at Beulah Baptist Church in Bertrandville. Pastor Levy Jones officiating.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Mrs. Mary Montgomery and the late Mr. Douglas Skidmore. She is a 2002 graduate of Assumption High School, and is employed by Industrial Design and Construction (IDC).
The prospective groom is the grandson of Mr. Oscar Bennett, Sr. and the late Mrs. Barbara Bennett and the late Mr. Alfred Junior and late Mrs. Lucille Junior. He attended Donaldsonville High School, and he also is employed by Industrial Design and Construction.
 

24th Annual Sunshine festival opens this weekend

The 24th Annual Sunshine Festival is scheduled for October 10-12 at the South Louisiana State Fair Grounds in Donaldsonville.
There will be various entertainments each day and even entertainment for children. Local schools' extracurricular groups will also be in attendance.
Gates will open Friday from 5 p.m.- 11 p.m. Saturday from 12 p.m.- 11 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m.- 9 p.m. There is a $2.00 admission fee at all gates. Ice chests and glass containers will not be allowed on the festival grounds.
Lowery Carnival Company will provide a midway with rides and game booths. An assortment of fair food will be available. For more information contact the Donaldsonville Chamber of Commerce office at 225-473-4814.
The Sunshine Festival is a major fundraiser for the Chamber of Commerce. Everyone, young and old, is encouraged to spend the weekend at the fairgrounds. See you at the Sunshine Festival!

Grand Isle State Park's beach reopened

The beach at Grand Isle State Park reopened to the public Friday.

t had been closed since May 7, while the Army Corps of Engineers replaced sand washed away by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The new sand will help protect Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island against future hurricanes.

DHS teachers honored

Teachers at Donaldsonville High School received prizes, breakfast and lunch during the school's first Teacher Appreciation Week celebration.

Volunteers took over recess and before- school duty to allow teachers to enjoy breakfast and lunch throughout the weeklong celebration. Assistant Principal Marilyn Washington said the event could not have been possible without the support of many community leaders, businesses and churches.

Folse celebrates 30 years, dedicates plant's expansion

For world-renowned Chef John Folse, Wednesday was more than just his own birthday.

Folse and his invited guests celebrated three birthdays in one day - the St. James native's 62nd birthday, the 30th anniversary of his Chef John Folse and Company food manufacturing and distribution operation and the ribbon cutting for his processing plant's recent expansion to triple the size of the facility.

Tau Kappa Omega participates in walk

The Tau Kappa Omega Chapter, along with members of the Greater Baton Area Chapters of AKA and over 30,000 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha participated in a synchronized ESP 1908 Global Centennial Walk June 28, designed to raise awareness about the importance of fitness.

Linking hands and stepping off at the same time worldwide, the members sent a strong statement about the importance of emotional, spiritual and physical health.

Fireworks, food, entertainment attracts thousands to annual July 3rd celebration

Organized by the Downtown Development District and Speakabox Entertainment through city funds the 15th edition of the annual observation may have seen its thickest gathering yet.

July 3rd Fireworks set for Thursday

The City of Donaldsonville, the Donaldsonville Downtown Development District and Speakabox Entertainment will present a star-spangled event featuring a spectacular fireworks display and world class musical talents July 3rd from 4 - 10 p.m. at Crescent Park.

Come enjoy BBQ, jambalaya, fried fish, hamburgers, beverages, souvenirs and much more in a hometown historic setting overlooking the mighty Mississippi River.

Next top model

Precious Green of St. James won the Next Top Model contest held at Donaldsonville Louisiana Marine Institute Friday. A fundraiser for the student council, the extracurricular activity also allowed the winner to have her hair and nails done.

American Legion Post 98 installs officers

Augustin Luna was reinstalled as the commander of the American Legion Babin - Haynes Post 98 during their annual installation of officers banquet at the post in Donaldsonville last Tuesday.

The American Legion Auxiliary Post 98 3766 also installed its officers at the banquet.

This is the first year Luna has served as commander. The Korean War ground combat veteran served in 1950-51 and is a retired railroad supervisor.

Juneteenth Freedom Festival connects youth to roots

"That is a bad man right there," said 11-year-old Antoine Jackson of Donaldsonville as children chased an African Stilt Walker through Louisiana Square during the annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival Saturday afternoon.

Standing over nine feet, the stilt walker danced for the children, but his sheer height was too much for some.

The day kicked off with the placement of a wreath on the granite memorial commemorating the Union Army's African American soldiers amongst riders on horseback.
