Prairieville man turns himself in on rape charges

A Prairieville man who was wanted for rape has turned himself in to authorities.

Stephen Janis, 55, was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on Nov. 21. Janis is accused of raping and abusing a woman who authorities say he held her against her will on the night of Nov. 17.

Deputies responded to a nearby hospital where they met with the victim who advised that Janis held her against her will, beat her, and then raped her.

Janis is charged with first-degree rape, false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault with a firearm, and second-degree battery.

Guilty Pleas

During the week of Nov. 21 to Nov. 23, 2016, the following defendants pled guilty to various charges and were sentenced in the 23rd Judicial District Court, parishes of Ascension and St. James. Assumption Parish had no court news to report this week.

Ascension Parish

Quincy Phillips, 2525 Orice Roth Road, Gonzales, age 24, pleaded guilty to Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and was sentenced to 10 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served. The imposed sentence is to be served without benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.

Thomas Cousin, 4216 Haydel Road, Darrow, age 36, pleaded guilty to Identity Theft and was sentenced to eight years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.

Stevan Smith, 2837 E Murf Orange, Texas, age 29, pleaded guilty to DWI Third Offense. Sentencing was deferred pending a Pre-Sentence Investigation.

Clarence Williams, 14074 Mire Road, Gonzales, age 39, pleaded guilty to Aggravated Battery and was sentenced to two years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served.

Linda Hudson, 13362 Decoteau Road, Gonzales, age 63, pleaded guilty to Theft Valued at $750 or More, but Less Than $5000. The defendant was sentenced to one year with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on one year supervised probation.

Layne Goodman, 42116 Norwood Road, Gonzales, age 19, pleaded guilty to Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property and was sentenced to 18 months with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 12 months supervised probation.

James Rood II, 41036 Marchand Road, Gonzales, age 39, pleaded guilty to First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring and was sentenced to two years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on five years supervised probation.

James McCormack, 18256 Log Cabin Road, Prairieville, age 18, pleaded guilty to Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property and was sentenced to 18 months with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 12 months supervised probation.

Chance Lambert, 17381 Penn Blvd., Prairieville, age 20, pleaded guilty to Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property and was sentenced to 18 months with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on 12 months supervised probation.

The above cases were prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Joni Buquoi and Steven Tureau. Presiding over these matters was the Honorable Judge Jessie LeBlanc.

St. James Parish

Jylin Nelson, 13245 Falgoust St., Vacherie, age 19, pleaded guilty to Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance and was sentenced to 18 months with the Louisiana Department of Corrections with credit for time served, to be suspended, and placed on five years supervised probation.
