The Donaldsonville's Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) rolled out the red carpet on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the city’s most stunning affair. At this breathtaking event, attendees immersed themselves in the lights, glitz and glamour of an Oscars-style affair at the Palazzo Bernardo's in Donaldsonville.

The mistress of ceremony for the Red Carpet Affair was Paige Mitchell, a student at Southern University and a alumna of Donaldsonville High and the guest speaker was Krystal Knight, PharmD, a pharmacist at CVS and an alumna of Ascension Catholic.

Additionally, MYAC awarded six scholarships to the students who serve as a positive example to young people, demonstrate outstanding youth leadership, promote responsible citizenship and achieved a significant civic accomplishments in the community and stellar academic achievements at school.

The 2016 MYAC Scholarship was awarded to Ascension Catholic's Karlie Montero and Logan Thibodeaux. The Mayor's Scholarship was awarded to Donaldsonville High School's Jalon Chatman, Tamiko Stroud and Katilyn Williams and Paige Joseph of Ascension Catholic.

Gwen Hilliard, a resident of Prairieville and a Red Cross Volunteer, the MYAC scholarship recipients and MYAC Commissioners received the highest volunteer award in Louisiana, the Louisiana Volunteer Service Award signed by Billy Nungesser, Lt. Governor. 

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council consists of a group of powerful and diverse young leaders committed to making a difference in Donaldsonville. They work on issues important to youth, talk to their peers, families and neighbors about their concerns and take action to address them. MYAC Commissioners represent high school students in their schools and neighborhoods. They meet with leaders of the community like the Mayor, City Council members, business owners and community groups to advocate for youth. MYAC meetings are open to the public. MYAC’s motto is “Young People Leading the Way to a Better Tomorrow”.
