This holiday season reminds us of the gift that was given to us, the child that became the man who gave his life so that we may live. It was presented at last week’s meeting by Rotarians Don and Peggy Guillot in just that way. Sharing pictures and comments of the annual Rabalais Run for Life that was held on the beautiful grounds of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. This year marked the 25th Anniversary of their daughter Shawn Elizabeth’s “gift of life”. The Guillots said it was the best thing they could have ever done for their child. She was a very loving, caring and giving person, and giving of her organs was something she would have wanted.
Peggy Guillot spoke strongly and with a heavy heart of the decision to donate. Their goal nowadays is to get everyone they possibly can to become a donor. It is the gift that keeps on giving. The Guillots had the opportunity to meet with the donor that received Shawn’s heart. Hearing his (her) heart was amazing. It kept him alive for 22 years. So to them it was a gift of life that kept on living. Their purpose in life now is to get people to donate organs and understand that the gift of life continues after the giving.
