More than 300 community members gathered at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales for the first Garney Gautreau Senior Sock Hop of the year on Jan. 27. Parish President Kenny Matassa said he was extremely pleased with the turnout, despite the recent change of venues from the Ascension Gym to the banquet room.

"This is one of the finest things we do," Matassa said. "This is put together well, it doesn't cost the Parish anything. We knew we were going to do the remodeling of the gym and we knew we were always going to have a place to put it. We will continue doing this for the senior citizens and the people of Ascension Parish."

The Senior Citizen Sock Hop first began in 2008 and was renamed the Garney Gautreau Senior Sock Hop earlier last year following the passing of the former recreation director. The event started out as a small monthly luncheon and has evolved to an event that sees roughly 300 to 400 residents a month.

The popular senior dance will continue to be held in the banquet room until renovations are completed at the Ascension Gym, which the Parish is anticipating sometime in May.
