A City Divided
There is no other way to state it. Residents of the City of Donaldsonville are divided by taxes. The proposal by Parish Councilman Oliver Joseph for the current half-cent hospital tax, to be split in half with the Westside Recreation Department was the main topic for discussion at the Parish Council meeting at the Parish Courthouse in Donaldsonville on Thursday, Feb. 2.
The public was allowed three minutes to voice their opinion on both sides. The hospital is very much needed to provide care to those on the Westside, as well as the need for better facilities to promote and utilize the recreational programs available, but not used because of the condition of the facilities.
In the end, the council decided to pass the proposal and bring the vote to the people, upon approval of legislation.
