A new dialysis center has opened in Ascension Parish, making this the third facility offered by the dialysis division of the Fresenius Medical Care North America. An open house was held on March 9, offering the community a tour of the new facility.

The clinic on S. Darla Ave. officially opened on Nov. 28, 2016, because the Prairieville location was continually growing and another location was needed to keep up with the increase in patients.

"We needed a new location that was going to be situated differently because we had a lot of people driving over the Sunshine Bridge to get to Prairieville," said Clinic Manager Cathy Meek. "It was about the location. There is such a need for this service out in this area."

The Dialysis facility has a staff of 11 medical professionals consisting of a social worker, dietician, RNs and patient care techs. Meek said patients typically receive Dialysis treatment three times a week.

The center has 15 chairs and can treat more than 90 patients a day with the various shifts ran. Meek noted that the center is discussing the possibility of a night shift, which will benefit working individuals needing the treatment.

"It offers them more flexibility and the ability for patients to work and be with their families more."

Every patient received assistance from the social worker and dietician, offering them nutritional counseling, dietary recommendations and assistance with insurance. They also have a pharmacy that will deliver medication to the clinic or the patient's home.
