The Ascension Parish Libraries in Donaldsonville, Dutchtown and Gonzlaes kicked off the week with a special hula hoop performance from Jennette Ginsburg of Hey Now Hooping, a New Orleans based business that offers community programs for all ages.
Children were greeted with circus style activities, hula hoop interactions and story telling from Ginsburg. She taught those in attendance how to hula hoop from a variety of her own personal hand-made hoops.
"The bigger the body the bigger the hula hoop you need," said the hula hoop expert.
This activity is part of the library's summer reading program, which kicked off at the end of May. This year's theme is Build a Better World, which includes a variety of performances, crafts and activities for all ages throughout the summer.
Ginsburg's performance was made possible through a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development and Department of Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council administered through the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge.
"We plan everything about a year-and-a-half in advance and we take the grant the previous summer," said Shelly Miller, Youth Services Librarian.
