The Assumption Parish LSU AgCenter and Assumption Community Hospital are working on building healthy communities one community at a time in order to help make the healthy choice the easy choice for all Louisianans.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Louisiana holds the highest obesity prevalence in the U.S. at 36 percent. Because of this high prevalence of obesity, Louisiana citizens suffer from high rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
This Assumption Parish Healthy Communities collaborative project, known as “Get Fit Ba You,” has been created through the efforts of both parties having a vested interest in making Assumption Parish healthier.
Coalition members are working together to address identified needs in the parish related to health and wellness. They have worked to identify resources, programs and activities already in place that can reinforce their efforts. The overall goal of “Get Fit Bayou” is to empower Assumption residents with skills to build healthier lifestyles by implementing educational opportunities, community projects, programs, and policies regarding healthy living.
The goal of Healthy Communities is to target not only individual behavior, but also the social and cultural norms surrounding health.
“On behalf of Assumption Community Hospital, we’re excited about this opportunity to partner with the Assumption Parish LSU Ag Center to create a more healthy community," Christy Hockaday said. "Awareness and education, along with great community relationships, are the keys to success; one person and one family at a time. We welcome this opportunity and look forward to significant progress together.”
