DCFS will dedicate the month to honoring those who have made a difference in a child's through adoption. The department will also raise awareness about adoption in an effort to find homes for the 140 children who still need adoptive families.

The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services celebrates Adoption Awareness Month in November. DCFS will host events around the state this month raising awareness about adoption and celebrating another record breaking year of adoptions in the state.

Between October 2016 and September 2017, 764 foster children found permanent, loving homes with 528 adoptive families. The previous record was in 2016 when 735 foster children were adopted by 532 families. DCFS Secretary Marketa Garner Walters said she is thrilled so many families stepped up to provide the support these children need.

"Adoption is about more than providing a home. It's about providing a permanent sense of place and belonging, and the security of knowing that no matter what life throws at you, these people - your family - will have your back," said Walters.

Governor John Bel Edwards declared November as Adoption Awareness Month in Louisiana. DCFS will dedicate the month to honoring those who have made a difference in a child's through adoption. The department will also raise awareness about adoption in an effort to find homes for the 140 children who still need adoptive families.

DCFS' annual statewide adoption celebration will be held at the Governor's Mansion on November 16.

The event celebrates new adoptive families and presents adoption advocate awards. In addition, community organizations will partner with local officials to hose a variety of adoption celebrations across the state. These will include family reunion-style barbecues, fairs, and balloon releases for adoptive families, as well as adoption finalization ceremonies and receptions around National Adoption Day on November 18.
