Lift Your Spirits: The History of Cocktail Culture in New Orleans

Sazerac, Absinthe Frappé, Hurricane, and Ramos Gin Fizz. The city of New Orleans has contributed more than its fair share to the world of cocktails. On Tuesday, May 15 at 6 p.m., the Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales will host Liz Williams, director of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, who will discuss how New Orleans’ unique history has led to the creation of some of the best loved drinks in the world. Copies of Ms. Williams’ books Lift Your Spirits: A Celebratory History of Cocktail Culture in New Orleans and New Orleans: A Food Biography will be available for purchase following the program. Mother’s Day Tea

Mother’s Day is almost here! Take the time to celebrate your wonderful mom, and spend quality time with her at our annual Mother’s Day Tea Party. We’ll have tea, lemonade, and cupcakes for everyone to enjoy, a few fun games of bingo, coloring, and a craft for Mom. Mother’s Day Tea Parties will be held on Tuesday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. in Donaldsonville, on Thursday, May 10 at 6:30 p.m. in Gonzales, and on Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m. in Dutchtown. Parties are designed for children ages four through eight, but all ages are invited to attend. Mom & Me Craft Time: Flowers & Vases

Show mom how much you care about her by spending some quality time together at Ascension Parish Library! During Mom & Me Craft Time, moms and tweens will create fun, small floral arrangements using silk flowers, small vases and acrylic water. Mom & Me Craft Time is open to tweens and teens, grades 4 and up, and their moms. This program will take place on Saturday, May 5 at 10 a.m. in Gonzales, on Tuesday, May 8 at 6 p.m. in Dutchtown, on Thursday, May 10 at 6 p.m. in Donaldsonville, and on Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m. in Galvez. Spring Storytime Concludes at Ascension Parish Library

Recently, Ascension Parish Library concluded its Spring Storytime Series. Ascension Parish Library hosts a variety of storytimes for children of all ages. These programs help foster early literacy skills needed by young children to successfully enter school. Coffee & Crafts: Folk Art Style Swamp Scene

You don’t have to be an accomplished artist to reap the benefits of creative expression. See how you can use basic craft supplies and upcycled everyday items and natural materials to make a charming piece of folk art, Thursday, May 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Ascension Parish Library in Donaldsonville. Local artist Yvonne Bayham will lead us in creating a mixed-media swamp scene on a ceramic tile suitable for display. No experience or training is necessary, just a willingness to have fun and use your imagination. We will provide all the materials needed, but things may get a bit messy, so you may want to bring an apron or t-shirt. Registration is required to attend, and seats are sure to go quickly.
