Ascension Catholic running back and safety Jamar Barber is one of the parish football players to watch in 2018.

The high-school football season is close. You can almost taste it.

In just one more week, teams from throughout the parish will be playing in their jamboree games. The week after that, they'll officially kick off the regular season.

The 2017 season was one of the best the parish has seen in a long time. Five of the six teams reached the second round of the playoffs. Ascension Catholic finished as Division-IV runner-up.

It should be another great year for parish football as the many standouts return from last season.

Jamar Barber (Ascension Catholic)

The other talented running back spearheading Ascension Catholic's offense is senior Jamar Barber. Barber also eclipsed the 1,600-yard mark for the Bulldogs last season as he ran for 1,643 yards and 16 touchdowns. Like Williams, Barber is also an important two-way starter. On defense, he was an all-district defensive back in 2017. He had two sacks and three interceptions.
