The first week of the high-school football season is now in the books.

Overall, Ascension Parish teams had a nice open to the season. Three of the six area schools came away with victories.

Two of those teams remained in the top 10 of the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association's high-school football polls.

The parish squad with the highest ranking was East Ascension.

The Spartans saw no movement at all in regard to their ranking. They remained at No. 5 in the Class 5A poll. This was where East Ascension was ranked in the preseason.

The Spartans came up with an impressive 48-30 victory over Lutcher on Friday night.

Ranking ahead of East Ascension in the Class 5A poll were John Curtis at No. 1, defending state champion Zachary at No. 2, West Monroe at No. 3 and Destrehan at No. 4.

No other Ascension 5A squad received any votes. St. Amant beat John F. Kennedy at Lake Area, 36-0, on Friday night. Dutchtown suffered a 35-18 loss to Walker.

East Ascension will play another strong 4A squad this Friday night. They'll hit the road to face Parkview Baptist.

The Eagles are ranked No. 9 in this week's Class 4A poll. They dropped two spots after losing a 34-21 contest to Catholic of Baton Rouge.

Parkview Baptist beat East Ascension last year by a score of 29-7. It was one of only two losses the Spartans suffered during the regular season.

They went on to win a share of the district title and reach the second round of the playoffs.

Karr is the top-ranked team in Class 4A. Warren Easton is second, St. Thomas More is third and Lakeshore and Northwood round out the rest of the top five.

In Class 3A, University is the top squad, followed by second-ranked Sterlington, third-ranked Jena, fourth-ranked Church Point and fifth-ranked Kaplan.

Donaldsonville is the only 3A team in the parish. They lost their season opener to Class 4A's Assumption on Friday night. The Tigers dropped the game by a score of 14-8.

In Class 2A, Notre Dame sits atop the rankings. Many is No. 2, Catholic of New Iberia is No. 3 and Welsh and Amite round out the rest of the top five.

The only other parish squad that is ranked in this week's LSWA polls is Ascension Catholic.

Despite a 66-0 victory on Friday night, the Bulldogs actually dropped two spots in the rankings.

Having reached the Division-IV state title game in 2017, and having 18 starters returning from that team, Ascension Catholic was ranked sixth in the Class 1A preseason poll.

The Bulldogs took care of business in week one. They went on the road and destroyed Mentorship Academy to improve to 1-0.

However, the Bulldogs dropped from sixth to eighth.

The teams that rank ahead of them are as follows: No. 1 Kentwood (District 6-1A foe, reigning Class 1A runner-up), No. 2 Southern Lab (District 6-1A foe), No. 3 Lafayette Christian (reigning Division-IV state champion), No. 4 West St. John (reigning Class 1A state champion), No. 5 Haynesville, 6. Oak Grove and No. 7 Logansport.

Ascension Catholic will try to improve their ranking this week as they play their first home game of the season on Thursday night. The Bulldogs will be hosting Sophie B. Wright of Class 3A.
