Letter from the Editor: Understanding the Golden Rule

I don’t often write letters to my readers but felt that this was an important message and it was too good not to share with others. I went to church yesterday, as a normal routine, and the pastor preached about the Golden Rule: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. As humans, we often struggle with this at times because some people can be down right ugly to us.

Growing up as a child, my parents and grandparents always told me to watch what I said to others, and if I did not have anything nice to say, just keep my comments to myself. Not only did they instill that in me as a child, but it was modeled for me as well. My grandparents never said anything bad about anyone, or even showed emotions of anger for that matter, now my parents on the other hand sometimes had to show anger because I was not the best angel in the world growing up, as I would get into any and everything that was of interest to me.

However, the golden rule is something I try to express in my family and friend’s relationships, my personal relationship, my work ethic, and my day-to-day attitude. I have realized the older I become; the harder it is to sometimes bite your tongue. As a child and teenager it was easy to say whatever it is I wanted and minimal action was taken, but as an adult the consequences become more harsh and the more I grow in my Christian walk, it is ungodly to express or harbor angered emotions and negative comments about others.

So as the holidays are in our midst and we generally tend to give more during this time, let the golden rule show in you on a daily basis, and extend far beyond the Christmas holidays.
