At the top of this month, The Donaldsonville Chief welcomed its new editor, Leslie D. Rose.

A native of southern New Jersey and graduate of Xavier University of Lousiana, she joins the publication as a resident of East Baton Rouge Parish, with roots in neighboring Iberville Parish.

Rose will serve both the communities of Gonzales and Donaldsonville, as did her predecessor, as editor of both GateHouse Media Louisiana’s area publications – The Donaldsonville Chief and Weekly Citizen.

Most recently employed in the features department of The Advocate, Rose has also served as the assistant managing editor of The Drum – a Ponchatoula-based community newspaper; contributing writer for various magazines in Baton Rouge and New Orleans; director of external communications for an area arts-based nonprofit agency; and as the owner-operator of Reminisce Photography by Leslie D. Rose.

Rose holds a high interest in the arts, and moonlights as a performance poet, as well as a media arts teaching artist through the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge.

She also has an extensive resume of celebrity interviews and entertainment-based writings. Through her time as a young journalist, Rose, while not simultaneously, served as a staff reporter, photographer, lifetstyles and entertainment editor of her campus newspaper – The Xavier Herald.

It was in her college years, she said she learned the art of deadlines, crafting an article and how to properly present a worthwhile publication, pleasing to its audience.

Her time as a features writer garnered her the opportuntiy to be present at press junkets in Los Angeles, talk to some of her very own favorite movie stars and musicians, and meet face-to-face with some of the greats of the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement.

While she has made quite the life out of arts and entertainment writing and reporting, Rose said she is excited to take on the role of editor of Ascension Parish’s only print publicatins. She is particularly excited to explore the history of Donaldsonville, and really get to know its residents.

It’s an excitement Brian Trahan, Regional Editor of GateHouse Media Louisiana, said he shares.

"We are excited to bring Leslie aboard in Ascension Parish," Trahan said. "She has an energy and passion for the newspaper business and will take very little time infusing her personality into our publications. She is a very community-minded person and we believe she will become an active part of a progressive and historic parish."

Rose will be all over Ascension Parish, gathering the news and features that are important to area residents. She said she also has future plans of relocating her family to Ascension Parish, as it has always been an area in which she adores.
