The Chief, located in Donaldsonville, Louisiana placed 2nd in 'General Excellence' only behind the St. Charles Herald-Guide. The Weekly Citizen, located in Gonzales, Louisiana placed 3rd for 'Best Overall Website.'

The Louisiana Press Association released the list of winners in the 2019 Better Newspaper Competition, and The Chief and Weekly Citizen faired well for work produced in 2018.

Both newspapers competed in Division 4. The category is known as the small circulation division, consisting of 38 total Louisiana newspapers.

Editor Greg Fischer was awarded 1st place 'Best News Story' for an article in the Chief titled "Time to talk about epilepsy and marijuana." Fischer was also awarded 1st place for 'Best Single Editorial' for an article titled "What Dunkirk and To Kill a Mockingbird taught me about the media."

Moreover, Fischer was awarded 2nd place for 'Best Regular Column (The Sam Hanna Award),' based on two columns "Can the adults get back to work," and "It's not often you hear," published in both The Chief and Weekly Citizen.

Fischer was awarded a 3rd place for 'Best Feature Photo' for a photograph taken at the 2018 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Next, Weekly Citizen Sports Editor Kyle Riviere placed 3rd in 'Best Sports Story' for the article titled "Gold Dome Re-Opens." Riviere placed 2nd for 'Best Sports Column,' based on the articles "Four Special Years," and "Welcome Back."

Further, Ad Director Crystal Barrett, Sales Executive Martine Duhe, and Sales Executive Jason Wall were awarded 1st place 'Best Money-Making Idea' for the Best of Ascension contest.

The Weekly Citizen was awarded 2nd place for 'Staff Generated Ad' for Lee Wealth Management. That was awarded to Aanifa LeBlanc, Jason Wall, and Crystal Barrett. The Chief placed 2nd for 'Best Ad Campaign' for their work with Barbera Chevrolet, credited to Aanifa LeBlanc, John Mouton, and Crystal Barrett.

Next, the staff of the Weekly Citizen was awarded 2nd Place for 'In-Paper Promotion.' The Chief was awarded 3rd place in the same category. The Chief was awarded 3rd place for 'Best Multiple Advertiser Page' for the Turkey Giveaway page.

The Weekly Citizen took 3rd place for 'Best Web Project,' credited to Jason Wall and Crystal Barrett for the St. Michel Day Spa Giveaway. The Weekly Citizen also earned 2nd and 3rd place in the 'Best Online Advertising - Single Ad' category for Women's Expo and Ascension Parish Library, respectively. The latter credited to Martine Duhe and Crystal Barrett.

Next, 'Best Special Section' was a Gatehouse sweep. 1st place went to The Chief for "Paint it All Pink" 2nd place went to The Chief for "La Fete Fairs and Festivals Guide," and 3rd place went to the Weekly Citizen for "Oh Baby Planner."

Lastly, the Plaquemine Post South won 2nd Place for 'Best Online Advertising Campaign' for Nottoway Plantation, credited to Jo Lynn Burns and Crystal Barrett.
