A first-half scoring barrage propelled undefeated Ascension Catholic to a 41-7 win over Ascension Christian Friday at Floyd Boutte Memorial Stadium.

Ascension Catholic (8-0, 3-0) never looked back after freshmen Khai Prean and Bryce Leonard accounted for four touchdowns in the first quarter. Freshman Casey Mays added two touchdown runs before Derrick Varnado broke the shutout for Ascension Christian (3-6, 1-2) with a 6-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Ascension Catholic head coach Benny Saia said the quick start allowed more Bulldogs to log playing time.

"When you are able to play fast early, you get to not sweat first of all, and second, you can play some players," Saia said. "They're getting some action on Friday and that's good for morale and good for experience. We're playing well right now, and we have been for the last three or four weeks. We don't want to lose our edge. We want to make sure we keep working and getting better."

Ascension Christian head coach Josh Puryear, who played under Saia at Dutchtown, spoke highly of his former coach and his first-year program.

"We've got good kids," Puryear said. "We're just trying to learn how to win. Ascension Catholic and Coach Saia have a top notch program. They do it the right way. We just have to put a lot of work in. I'm proud of them fighting, but I wish we would have had a little more early on."

The Bulldogs racked up 317 yards rushing on 33 attempts, along with 52 yards passing. Meanwhile, the Lions picked up 140 rushing yards on 24 tries.

The Bulldogs set the tone early with a defensive stop, forcing a punt. Prean opened the scoring at the 10:44 mark with a 43-yard run around the right side.

Less than a minute later, Leonard found Eric Simon Jr. open on a 13-yard touchdown pass to the right.

Leonard scored on a scramble to the right from 12 yards out at the 3:57 mark in the opening quarter. The extra point try failed.

Simon collected his first of two interceptions with just under two minutes to go in the first.

The Bulldogs capitalized on the turnover when Prean scored his second touchdown, an 18-yard run down the left sideline.

In the second quarter, Simon hauled in his second interception. The Bulldogs capitalized with a scoring drive capped by Mays' first varsity touchdown. The run was scored at the 2:46 mark in the second.
