ASK THE CHIEF
The old Lowery School, once owned by Ascension Parish School Board, is now part of the campus of The Church of Donaldsonville.
According to Pastor Tashanti Pitts, there are no plans to demolish the school and they are restoring the building to be used by The Church.
"Since we've gotten it, we have renovated two buildings on it so far," Pitts said. "We own it as a church and we want to do everything we can to make the facility available to the community."
According to Lee Melancon, Executive Director - Donaldsonville Downtown Development District, the school can't be listed on the historic register because it is not in the historic district. Depending on when it was built, it may be listed on the National Historic Register, however the listing would still require the property to adhere to the city's blight ordinance.
