Babin announces candidacy for 23rd Judicial District Attorney
Ricky Babin, 23rd Judicial District First Assistant District Attorney and lifelong resident of Ascension Parish, recently announced his candidacy for the office of district attorney for the 23rd Judicial District.
The seat is up for election in the Oct. 4 primary election, with any runoff taking place during the Nov. 4 general election.
"I am a professional prosecutor, not a professional politician," Babin said. "I have spent my career prosecuting criminals in hundreds of criminal cases. As the First Assistant District Attorney, I know how the district attorney's office and the criminal justice system work and how to improve them."
Babin, 44, said his goals for the office include providing competent and professional prosecution to protect public safety, speedy trials to get criminals off the streets quickly, the creation of a strike force on crime to especially target habitual and career criminals, offering special protection for seniors, providing highly trained prosecutors to prosecute sexual predators and to have an open-door policy to all citizens.
Babin has served as an Assistant District Attorney for over 13 years; the last six as a full-time first assistant.
He has overseen the day-today operations of the office, including the prosecution of felony and misdemeanor criminal cases.
Babin began his career with the district attorney's office prosecuting sex crimes and drug offenses, and now represents numerous public bodies in the 23rd Judicial District. Babin also has a private law office in the Gonzales area.
Babin has been married to Phyllis Rome Babin for the past 22 years. They have two children, Amanda Kathryn Babin and Jordan Christopher Babin. Phyllis Babin, as well as Babin's brother and two sisters, are public school teachers in Ascension Parish.
Babin is a 1981 graduate of East Ascension High School. He received a
Bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University and a Juris Doctorate degree from LSU Law School.
Babin graduated sixth in his law school class, graduated Order of the Coif, and was selected as a member of the Louisiana Law Review. He was also honored by being selected as a member of the LSU Law School Hall of Fame.
Babin is an avid hunter and fisherman and is also a cattleman. He is a member of the National Rifle Association and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. He is also a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Coastal Conservation Association. Babin and his family are members of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Prairieville. He has also has been a long time supporter of many youth programs, including the local 4-H program and St. Jude charities.
"I humbly ask for the vote and support of all people in Ascension, Assumption and St. James parishes," Babin said.
