Recreation survey to poll residents

Staff Report

Parish rural area residents can expect the possibility of a knock on their doors between Aug. 9 and 17, as representatives from a research firm will pool 400 households to get input on residents' wants for parish recreation services.

The Ascension Parish Council has engaged the research firm Percy & Company of Baton Rouge to conduct a survey of 400 households in the rural areas of the parish. The survey is the lead a planning process for the parish Parks and Recreation Department.

"This is an opportunity for the citizens of Ascension to give their opinions on the parish parks and let us know how we can move forward to develop a world-class parks system for Ascension Parish," Parish President Tommy Martinez said.

Oliver Joseph, chairman of the council's Recreation Committee, said the survey will be used to gauge public interest in certain recreation programs or developments.

"We want to know if the citizens want us to build swimming pools, skate parks, more baseball fields, tennis courts or whatever," Joseph said. "We are beginning a planning process and input from the parish citizenry is paramount to us getting it right."

Interviewers from Percy & Company will begin going door-to-door to randomly selected households in both east and west Ascension Parish on Saturday, Aug. 9 through Sunday, Aug. 17.
