The Community Planning Workshop is a one-day event that engages community leaders, citizens, and guest planners in discussing and proposing specific solutions to urban planning challenges. They are held on annual basis in conjunction with the national conference of the American Planning Association (APA).The APA is a professional organization for people who work in the field of urban and community planning. The national conference is taking place Saturday April 10 – Tuesday April 13 in New Orleans.

Workshops typically begin with an introduction of individuals involved and a tour of the community, neighborhood, or site. Participants will form breakout groups that begin by discussing existing issues and formulate new ideas based on community needs and sound planning techniques. Each breakout group reports on its results to the entire group, and facilitators lead a discussion to form consensus around future goals and ways to achieve these goals.

Previous Community Planning Workshops have taken place in Oakland, Chicago, San Antonio, Las Vegas, and Washington DC on topics as varied as technology corridor development, park revitalization and improvement of distress communities.
