Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley presented the Leadership Ascension project, Healthy Spaces for West Bank Faces, a check for $10,000 to assist in building a park in Donaldsonville.

Project team member and Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Westside Patrol Division Captain Rick Bergeron accepted the donation from Sheriff Wiley on behalf of the project.

“Sheriff Wiley was an early champion of this project, and we are so very grateful not only for this monetary donation, but also for his commitment to making this a safe space for the community,” said project manager Jackie Tisdell, who is the public information officer for Ascension Public Schools.

LSU agricultural engineering students presented a playground design based on drawings by Donaldsonville Primary and Lowery Elementary students. The project team is in the process of gathering bids for the equipment, which will include at minimum a rock wall, suspension bridge, monkey bars, triple slide and swings. Plans are for a community build to take place on April 9 and 10 at The Church of Donaldsonville, Catalpa St. at West 6th St., Donaldsonville.

An open forum was held on Feb. 4 where LSU landscape architecture students gathered input for their complete site plan for the park, which will include the playground equipment, existing basketball court and a possible walking path.

“We need to raise a minimum of $50,000 to build the playground and refurbish the basketball court. If we are able surpass our goal, we will apply it to additional enhancements to the space based on the design developed by the LSU students and priorities expressed by the community,” Tisdell said.

Those wishing to partner or contribute to this project can contact project manager Jackie Tisdell at Jackie.Tisdell@apsb.org or (225) 210-7567.
