On Saturday, May 7,the area’s top-ranking youth poetry slam teams and individuals will compete for the chance to become slam champions at the ALL CITY Teen Poetry Slam Festival. This year that roster includes one indie poets from Ascension – Jolie Gilbert – as well as the Dutchtown High School poetry slam team. Also taking to finals stage this year is the winners of the coveted Spirit of the Slam award – Donaldsonville High School poetry slam team.

A slam is an Olympic-style poetry competition founded in the 1980’s, where poets are judged on the written and performance merit of original compositions. For ALL CITY, teams must consist of four to six members. Unfortunately the DHS slam team was unable to meet that minimum requirement and were disqualified from the competition. However, Coach Michael Hilton still brought his students to the event and they were permitted to read their poems and be judged. Part of their wining the Spirit of the Slam award was the notion that the disqualified team still showed up and participated even though they knew they had no chance at winning because of the shortage of team members. The group also cheered for everyone and was hardly seen throughout the festival sans smiles. As part of their award, they will perform the opening poem at theALL CITY Teen Poetry Slam Festival Grand Slam Finals, which will take place at LSU Shaver Theatre on May 7 at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at Eventbrite.com.
