Nationals overcome Astros' rally to wrap up WARA play
Trevel Dunn scored on a pass ball after stealing second and third base in the bottom of the fifth to give the Nationals an 8-7 victory over the Astros in West Ascension Recreation Association's finale Thursday evening at South Louisiana State Fairgrounds' LaLa Regira Field.
However, the game was forfeited from the onset when the Nationals were forced to play with two Astros to field a team of nine because of a lack of eight players. Robert Landry drew a full count walk off Cade Schexnayder and stole second and third in the top of the first but Schexnayder struckout Trey Jarrell and Seth Guercio to get out of the inning.
Reid Schexnayder hit Alex Olivier and Trent Burgess to open the bottom half and Colby Pujol lined to left to plate a run before Schexnayder's groundout crossed another to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead.
Collin Rowland reached on an error to lead off the second, David LeBlanc drew a walk and Schexnayder reached on an error to plate a run for the Astros.
Schexnayder grounded inside the third base bag to lead off the bottom of the fourth for the Astros and stole second before Kyle Schexnayder reached on an error that crossed a run.
Dunn drew a walk and Ernest Terry lined pass third to load the bases but Courtland Joshua popped up to catcher Jarrell in front of the backstop and Josh Delery struckout before Olivier grounded pass second to plate two runs leaving runners on the corners.
Burgess lined to center to cross two more giving the Nationals a 7-1 lead. Rowland struckout Cade Schexnayder to end the inning after walking Pujol, the first batter he faced.
The Astros answered in the fifth inning when Jarlon Joseph reached on an error and took third on a pass ball before Kevin Dinino lined to left to plate a run. Trey Richard lined to left before Landry loaded the bases on a grounder to third off Olivier and a run scored on a throw over at second cutting it to 7-3.
Richard scored on a Guercio's suicide squeeze after Olivier struckout Jarrell and Rowland lined a triple over center to plate a run. LeBlanc drew a walk and stole second before a run scored on the throw and Schexnayder lined pass second to knot it up 7-7.
Dunn stole second after drawing a one-out walk in the bottom half following Rowland's strikeout of Kyle Schexnadyer and then stole third after Terry was struckout.
Olivier picked up the win giving up three runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one in one inning of relief. Cade Schexnayder surrendered four runs on two hits and four walks while striking out four in four innings.
Rowland took the loss giving up one run on no hits and two walks while striking out three in one inning of relief. Reid Schexnayder surrendered seven runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two in 3 2/3 innings.
Olivier was 1 of 1 with two runs and two RBI for the Nationals, while Burgess was 1 for 2 with one run and two RBI.
Rowland was 1 for 2 with two runs and one RBI for the Astros.
