A tanker truck burned after it was involved in a fatal crash near the Sunshine Bridge Friday.

Nathan Folse of Baton Rouge was pronounced dead at the scene when an 18-wheeler struck his vehicle on highway 70 near the Sunshine Bridge in St. James Parish last Friday afternoon.

Folse was driving a 2002 GMC Yukon eastbound on Hwy. 70 when the tanker truck, which was traveling, struck him head on westbound on Hwy. 70 when it crossed the centerline and struck the Yukon, police said.

The 2008 International tanker truck, driven by Gregory P. Stagg, 53, of Baton Rouge, caught fire after the collision, police said.

The tanker, owned by Southern Ionics, was not loaded at the time and contained only residue of an aqueous ammonia solution, according to police. The tank was not breached and none of the residual contents were released, police added.

Troopers and St. James Parish Sheriff’s deputies closed Hwy. 70 between Hwy. 3125 and the Sunshine bridge while they investigated.

Stagg was arrested and charged with negligent homicide and driving left of center. He was booked into the St. James Parish Prison.
