2011 Komen Baton Rouge Race for the Cure® to Commemorate 15th Anniversary

Staff reports

It's a perfect forecast for the 2011 Susan G. Komen Baton Rouge Race For The Cure®, the largest 5K race in the Capital Region! Come join us this Saturday, February 19th, 2011. This year's 15th anniversary event will kick off with a 1-mile fun run at 8:30 a.m. and 5K run/walk at 9 a.m. The race starts at LSU's Old Front Nine next to the Patrick Taylor Hall on Nicholson Drive Extension. Race day registration begins at 7 a.m.

With over 9,000 registered participants already, supporters are helping us get one step closer to a world without breast cancer! This year's theme of "Why Do I Run" shares stories of why people come out to walk, run, stroll and sometimes just hang out at the Race for many reasons. Celebrating survival, honoring those who lost the fight with breast cancer, investing in the health of children or sisters or friends, saluting co-survivors, and sometimes just to pass a good time with 11,000 other fun people are all reasons people participate. In keeping with the 15th anniversary theme, the Affiliate will spotlight 15 "Why I Run" stories during post-race ceremonies.  Also planned is a salute to some of the local organization's founders along with breast cancer awareness, tour of a mammography unit and more.

In 2010, breast cancer survivors, sponsors, volunteers, and friends of the Affiliate from across the 11-parish Greater Baton Rouge service area helped to raise $500,000 to fund breast cancer awareness, screening, treatment and research programs. Since inception in 1992, the Affiliate has invested more than $1.8 million toward these programs.

Louisiana leads the nation in breast cancer mortality. One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. There are 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. today.
