Ascension Idol comes to Donaldsonville

Staff reports

The Ascension Fund is holding several auditions around the parish to see talents of teenagers at various schools and the end result will be “Ascension Idol” to be held May 6. In this competition, students ages 13-18 will compete in a singing competition with other students throughout Ascension Parish.Donaldsonville High School Semi Final Event will take place Thursday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m.

The goal is to raise money for the non-profit Ascension Fund. The Ascension Fund has been instrumental in awarding grants to teachers and schools for various projects that help make a difference in the way children are learning.

This is the first year the Ascension Fund is holding the Ascension Idol talent competition. Much like the popular TV show American Idol, Ascension Idol will be showcasing the vocal talents of some of Ascension Parish’s most talented high school students. With all of the benefits of the fundraiser going to Ascension Fund, this is an event that is not only worthwhile but gives back directly to the schools that are participating. A special thanks goes out to the amazing sponsors of this event: Cabela’s, CF Industries, Eatel, InfiniEdge Software, Lamar Dixon Expo Center, Layne’s Jewelry, nStrumental Designs and Tanger Outlets.

Founded in 1991, Ascension Fund was created as an educational endowment fund in Ascension Parish. Each year, public schools and teachers alike apply for the two available grants – the school impact grant of $2,500 and the individual teacher grant of $1,000. Each proposal is ranked based on merit and from there, the Ascension Fund board allocates funds to the candidates chosen for awards. To date, the Ascension Fund has awarded over 1,000 grants for a total of over 1 million dollars to deserving schools and teachers in Ascension Parish. By funding special projects, fun hands-on learning strategies as well as providing much-needed supplies to Ascension Parish public schools, the Ascension Fund has made a deep impact in the community that is appreciated by students, teachers, administrators and parents alike.

Donaldsonville High School will hold their preliminary auditions prior to the Semi-Final Event and the Ascension community is encouraged to come out and support not only the Ascension Parish high schools but the Ascension Fund as well as the semi-finalist performers on March 31st at 7:30 p.m. The final event where students from all participating schools will compete against one another will be held

May 6, 2011 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Lamar Dixon Trademart Building.
