Aviation camp for teens takes off in Gonzales

Staff reports

“Whenever it is in any way possible, every boy and girl should choose as his life work some occupation which he should like to do anyhow, even if he did not need the money.”

This quote by William Lyon Phelps underscores the purpose of the ACE Camp.  Many times a young man or young woman will look up at a beautiful blue sky and wonder for a moment about the freedom of flight, but not know how to transform their dream into reality.

Getting on the fast track to a career or hobby in Aviation could not be easier for teens this summer.  Teens between the ages of 15 & 18 or who will be enrolled in High School this fall can get an up-close and personal look at the Aviation Industry, during the 2011 Aviation Career Education (ACE) Camp at Louisiana Regional Airport in Gonzales, June 6-10.

Staffed by an elite group of College Students pursuing a career in aviation, this camp is an exciting way to explore the diversity within the industry, from commercial pilot to airport design and management. Spending the week at one of  Louisiana’s busiest General Aviation airports will present many unique opportunities for campers.  They will receive hands-on training for pilot preflight duties, by performing actual preflight inspections on airplanes and making cross-country flight plans.  They will experiment with the principles of flight and the mechanics of flight controls. They will see first hand the ins-and-outs of airport operations. While this exhilarating opportunity to delve into the world of aviation takes place, considerable attention will be directed to the knowledge needed for the Private Pilot License.

The camp is presented by, an aviation industry group whose mission is "education, celebration and preservation of aviation across the state of Louisiana." It is supported by the Louisiana Airport Managers Association, the Aviation Division of the state Department of Transportation and Development, the FAA's Baton Rouge Flight Standards District Office and Louisiana Tech’s Professional Aviation Department.

ACE Camp is part of a statewide effort to help young people explore aviation. Other camps will take place in DeRidder,  June 13-17; Chennault International Airport in Lake Charles, June 20-24; Houma, July 11-15; Ruston, July 18-22; and  Alexandria, July 25-29.  The registration fee is $200.
