A car struck and killed a 10-year-old boy last Friday morning on La. 1 in Assumption Parish as he returned home from checking the family mailbox across the highway, State Police reported.

Andrew Frey Jr., 10, of Belle Rose, went to the box as his mother watched from the other side of La. 1 and was coming back when he moved into the path of a northbound car about 8:15 a.m., said Trooper Bryan Zeringue, spokesman for State Police Troop C.

Andrew was crossing from the southbound shoulder back toward his mother’s side of the highway in the 7500 block of La. 1 in the Belle Rose area, Zeringue said.

Demi M. Randazzo, 20, of Donaldsonville, the driver of the northbound car, a 1999 Toyota Corolla, tried to avoid Andrew, but was unable to do so, troopers said

Zeringue said the driver reported that the mother appeared to signal to Andrew to stop, but it is not clear whether the boy saw her.

Andrew was taken to Prevost Memorial Hospital in Donaldsonville, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, troopers said.

Randazzo was not injured, was wearing her seat belt and took a breath test that found she had no alcohol in her system, troopers said.

No charges have been filed in the crash.

An investigation is continuing, troopers said.
