Renee Mire Michel to Seek Re-election for Ascension Parish Assessor

Staff reports

Renee Mire Michel, current Assessor in Ascension Parish, officially announced her plans to run for re-election in the October 22 election. Michel has held the post of Assessor since 2003.

“I’m very proud of the accomplishments in the Assessor’s office over the past 8 years. When I was first elected, we had some major challenges in one of the fastest growing parishes in the country. We met those challenges head on and worked very hard to bring the office up-to- date and more accessible,” Michel said.

Michel said she has added new state-of-the-art software systems, trained and certified property appraisers, implemented Mass Appraisal techniques and put assessment records online. She also stated that due to the tremendous growth in the parish, she has appraised and assessed over 10,000 new properties during her time as Assessor.

“I’ll continue to keep the Ascension Assessor’s office on the cutting edge of technology to insure fairness, accuracy and access for the property owner”, Michel added.

Michel said she would always support the Homestead Exemption for homeowners and make sure the benefit is fairly and appropriately applied. To achieve the goal of transparency, Michel has made sure property records are readily available online and at the Assessor’s office. She has increased the number of trained and certified deputies at both office locations to insure accuracy and access.

Michel said: “My goal as your Assessor is to assess property in the fairest manner so that no property owner pays more than their fair share of the tax burden. I’ll continue to work for complete transparency and fairness in all assessments by executing my job impartially and keeping politics out of the Assessor’s office.”

Michel has over 30 years experience in the Assessor’s Office, serving as Assessor since 2003.

She is a Certified Louisiana Assessor having completed hundreds of hours of continuing education on appraisal and current assessment techniques. Mrs. Michel is a member of

St. Theresa Catholic Church in Gonzales, the Gonzales Rotary, Chamber of Commerce in

Ascension and Donaldsonville, International Association of Assessing Officers and serves as President of the Ascension Community Theatre. She is married to Johnny Michel and they have a son, Nate, daughter in law Robin Bourgeois Michel and one grandchild, Grant.

The election for Assessor is set for October 22nd.
