Coach Greg Hill announced his retirement after spending the past 36 years of his life in Ascension Parish School system and at Donaldsonville High School.

“It is rare to find a person who has spent their entire career at one school, we are truly losing someone who was a big part of this school,” said Principal Dr. Esrom Pitre.

Hill said he always enjoyed coaching and teaching kids, but now wants time for himself. “I have always been there for everyone else, and now I feel it is time for me to take time for myself and just relax,” he said.

Hill said although he is ready to spend his days relaxing, it is a bittersweet moment for him.

“I love the kids, but I just decided it was time.”

Over the course of his career, Hill won 15 district titles, and last year held the No. 3 playoff seed but lost against Red River in the regional round.

Hill leaves with numerous awards and accolades, most recent being selected as the Class 2A Coach of the Year in 2010-2011 from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Hill thought back and reminisced on the fact that he was the youngest coach on staff when he first began his coaching career and maintained that status for about five years, and now has turned to being the person who been their the longest.

“I have enjoyed my time here, and have learned a lot and taught a lot,” said Hill.

Hill said he plans to attend games regularly in the upcoming season.
