Parish Veterans visit resource fair

Staff reports

Ascension Parish veterans visited the Second Annual Veterans Resource Fair held at the Lamar-Dixon Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 12. Local U.S. Army veterans Dexter (right) and Nina (second from right) McCrary visited the resource booths with their children Sean (second from left), Deanna (third from left) and William (third from right). Suzanne Hamilton (left), director of the Ascension Counseling Center, offered information about the services her office offers for veterans. The McCrarys met while serving in the Army. “Nina and I met 21 years ago in the Army and were separated from each other because I went to Desert Storm and she went to Heidelberg, Germany,” Dexter McCrary said. This year’s fair theme was “Serving Those Who Served,” said organizer Cheryl Kinchen. Participating organizations included the Ascension Counseling Center, the Red Cross, the Veterans Administration, Quad Area Veterans and the Louisiana Relay Service. “I wish we had this (Veterans Resource Fair) more often because benefits change and this keeps you up to date,” McCrary said. “Plus, you get to see other veterans too. We’re really happy with the parish giving vets these kinds of events.”
