DeRon Talley, a recent graduate from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, has been named the new editor of The Chief in succession of Allison B. Hudson, who now serves as the Public Information Officer for the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office.

Talley, 22, is a native of Folsom, La. (located about 10 miles north of Covington) and is starting his professional career at The Chief. As an undergraduate, he worked for ULM's student newspaper, The Hawkeye, in all four years of college, and during his senior year Talley served as the sports editor.

As sports editor, Talley earned two writing awards for his work. He earned a second place award at the Southeast Journalism Conference in the on-site sports feature writing contest and he earned third place in the Louisiana Press Association for best sports story or feature.

Also as sports editor, Talley helped The Hawkeye win first place for best college newspaper in the American Scholastic Press Association.

During his senior year at ULM, Talley was named Mass Communication Department Most Outstanding Senior and College of Arts & Sciences Most Outstanding Senior. In May he graduated with a B.A in Mass Communication and a minor is Spanish.

Talley also was on the track and field team at ULM for three years and earned Sun Belt Conference All-Academic honors from 2008-11.

"I'm glad to be able to serve as the editor here at the Chief," Talley said. "I look forward to producing great work for the citizens and keeping them informed and entertained weekly."
