Lowery Middle School Participates in National Geographic Bee

On Friday, January 11, 2013, students in sixth through eighth grades at Lowery Middle School competed in the preliminary rounds of the school level of the 2013 National Geographic Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society. These students participated in a preliminary competition consisting of seven rounds of oral questions in the following categories: U.S. Geography, U.S. Geographic Comparisons, State Nicknames, Continents, Odd Item Out, Physical Geography, and Traveling around the World.
Out of more than 300 students, eight qualified for the finals: Jason Etienne, Darell Honora, Ta’Kia Mollere, Reana Sullivan, Theron Taylor, Jaylynn Tennessee, Israel Warr, and Jalen Winchester. The final round consisted of oral and written responses to questioning. The third-place winner was Ta’Kia Mollere. Reana Sullivan and Jalen Winchester advanced to the Championship Round.
The school winner was Jalen Winchester. Jalen has taken a qualifying test which was submitted to the National Geographic Society. Up to 100 students from across the state of Louisiana will be selected to compete in the state bee on April 5th.
