Doug Berky visits Ascension Parish Library
Every year, Ascension Parish Library is proud to welcome great performing artists as part of our summer reading program. Join us on Monday, July 21 at 10:30 a.m. in Galvez and 2 p.m. in Donaldsonville or on Tuesday, July 22 at 10:30 a.m. in Dutchtown and 2 p.m. in Gonzales as Doug Berky delights crowds with his theatrical performance. Using the illusion of the mime, antics of the clown, transformation of his own original masks, a good story, and improvisation, Doug Berky will inspire laughter and reflection. This program is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge.
Many of the programs at the library this summer focus on our theme, Fizz, Boom, Read. Each week, we offer exciting programs that explore the world around us. Aliens and earthlings will love our UFO craft. It’s out of this world! This make-and-take program is scheduled for Galvez on Tuesday, July 22 at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and for Dutchtown on Friday, July 25 at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Make-and-Take crafts are a great opportunity for children to express their individuality and creativity through a short art project. Parents are welcome to help their children create a one-of-a-kind item at 4 different make-and-take crafts this summer. While crafts are open to children of all ages, children under the age of 8 may need parental assistance with the craft.
Second – fifth graders can learn about density while crafting an unforgettable fashion accessory with clear tubing and glitter during Totally Tubular Science Bracelets in Galvez on Thursday, July 24 at 2 p.m.
Sign up for the Fizz, Boom, Read summer reading program when you stop in to participate in any of these events. Children from birth through eighth grade are eligible to join our reading program. Studies show that children who read at least ten minutes per day during the summer are more likely to retain and improve the reading skills learned during the recent school year. Parish children who join the reading program can track their reading by minutes read to earn prizes. Any child who is registered for the reading program can complete it by reading 100 minutes during the months of June and July. All children who complete the reading program will receive a blue 2014 Fizz, Boom, Read book bag and a free bowling pass courtesy of Premier Lanes.
