A new event, Taste of the Stroll, will take place on September 13, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Columns on the River, renovated Ascension Bank building from 1911.  Retro Dukes band, artists, actors, silent auction and local culinary fare will be highlighted. Tickets are $25 a piece and can be purchased at DDD offices at 224 Railroad Avenue, Raylin House Bed and Breakfast 125 Lessard Street or Columns on the River 420 Mississippi Street. Only 200 tickets available.

The Donaldsonville Downtown Development District, (DDD) will host its free annual Avenue Evening Stroll on November 22, 2014 from 5 p .m. to 10 p.m. along Mississippi Street, Marchand and Railroad Avenue, in Historic Donaldsonville, Louisiana.    This walk through time highlights culture and art since the 1806 founding of Donaldsonville, Louisiana.

This year, the Stroll will begin at Alvin Batiste Studio, across from Elray Kocke Hardware at 512 Mississippi Street.    Mississippi Street will also feature the renovated Columns on the River housing, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, artists and music, Sponsor Capital One will once again become a departure/arrival point for the horse and buggy tours. Lemann’s Building will swing open the doors for a trip into the past and live music.

Another new development, Railroad Avenue will be closed to motorized traffic for the duration of the event. This will greatly aid strollers in shopping, walking, dancing and visiting along the promenade. There is plenty of parking on side streets and parking lots.

“We are very appreciative of Mayor Leroy Sullivan helping safely us grow this event. With Railroad Avenue closed to motorized traffic, families and visitors will certainly be able to better enjoy stores, bands, restaurants, reinactors in historic fashion. Not only will mobility be improved for those in wheelchairs and strollers, but we will be able to move artists and musicians onto the sidewalks, similar to many New Orleans art walks. The safety of our residents and visitors was the first consideration, as crowds grow every year.” Missy Jandura, Executive Director of Main Street Donaldsonville and Donaldsonville Downtown Development District.

The Stroll will continue, down Railroad Avenue, past the light to the railroad lines. A popular Swamp Pop live band, sponsored again by Donaldsonville Glass and Body Works will be filling the night with jitterbug sounds. Swamp Pop music is very special to Ascension Parish and of course, this location hosts a Horse and Buggy departure/arrival space and classic cars gravitate to the surrounding parking lots. Vehicles will be able to access all the regular parking on this side of the street light.

Chairman of the Stroll, Jeffery Bean, has called upon all visitors to expand the costuming of their favorite period of time. Last year, many students of Ascension Catholic High School had many students supporting the historic look back in costume. Costumes from Antebellum times, Bonnie and Clyde time period of the 1920s, 1950s poodle skirts were most popular in 2013. Encouraging the community to embrace history in a fun and original way by dressing the part. Getting everyone, especially youth, engaged in history, from any decade, is something truly special to The Stroll.

Horse and Buggy rides, expanded space for all types of artists, Live nativity, heritage musicians, reinactors, gospel choirs, artists and of course, fantastic merchants and restaurants will be open late for Christmas shopping, The River Road African American Museum and Donaldsonville Museum will be open during event.

Donaldsonville is the only Mainstreet Community in Ascension Parish and one of only 34 in the State of Louisiana. Donaldsonville is the 2nd largest Historic District in Louisiana, Cultural District, Downtown Development District and Enterprise Zone.

With expansion of space, we are recruiting artists, of all mediums, to register with a 25.00 booth fee for this 5 hour event.

Looking for sponsors, volunteers, artists, reinacting groups, authors to participate to make this event a success.
