The Donaldsonville area community proved its closeness and uniqueness Sunday when it concluded a benefit dinner for a friend who suffers from pancreatic cancer. The community raised $104,000 for Matt Weil a native and friend of the community who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2014.

Marvin Gros, chairman of the fundraiser, wanted to push the community help a loved one in need and the community responded to Weil’s need.

The committee had established a goal of $50,000 to pay for medical costs for Weil, but little did the committee know that over 450 people would attend the event to help contribute to the cause at Café Lafourche.

“This event is attributed to Donaldsonville and when so many negative things are implied about Donaldsonville, know that it takes care of one of its own,” Gros said. “The committee would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to make this event such a success but most importantly the community for showing such a big heart.”
