ACHS Class of 1955 Reunites

DONALDSONVILLE – The Ascension Catholic High School Class of 1955 held its 60th reunion on Sept. 19.

     Mass was held at Ascension of our Lord Catholic Church and class members participated as readers, offertory bearers and Eucharistic ministers. In his welcome, Father Paul Yl commented on their being the first class to graduate as Ascension Catholic High.

    The 1954-55 school year began in a ready-to-occupy building on the corner of St. Vincent and Opelousas St. combining what had been St. Vincent’s Institute (SVI) and Catholic High (CHS) into Ascension Catholic High (ACHS). The 42 seniors – 20 girls and 22 boys – were the first class to occupy the buildings known today as Ascension Catholic High, a Diocesan Regional School.

     Following Mass, the group gathered at the Clarion Inn Confrernece Center, Gonzales to celebrate. Graduates attending were George Babin, Dalton Esneault, Harold Fabre, Raymond Gautreau, Clayton Guedry, Bryan Guillot, Emile Landry, Milburn Landry, Roland Landry, Paul Milano, Ronald Rome, Norbert Schexnayder, Clyde Paul Waguespack, George Zeringue, Anna Clair Kocke Achee, Anne Dufrene Babin, Yvonne Bahry Caballero, Frankie Montalbano Casteigne, Maxine Cointment Dugas, Joycelyn Daigle Dubreuil, Beverly Savoie Hunley, Beverly Milano LeBlanc, Jeannette Bujol Maher, Carolyn Robert McCauley, Mercy Capone McKinna, Edith Thibodeaux Rodrigue, Carolee Duplessis Smiley and Genevieve Waguespack Sotile. Unable to attend were: Robert Coffman, Martha Guillot Crochet and Lt. Col. Roy Innes.

     The gathering included a memorial for deceased members: Edith Schexnaydre Bourg, Catherine Dias Gautreaux, Claudette Bloch Hamlett, Barbara Redmon Mury, Carolyn Duplessis Smiley, Gerald Capone, Leo LeBlanc III, James Gravois, Edmundo Gonzales, Ronnie Sanchez and Leonard LeBlanc.
