Assumption Parish Sheriff resigns without notice

Staff Report
Former Assumption Parish Sheriff, Mike Waguespack

Late on the evening of Feb. 10, Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack sent out a letter of resignation, effective immediately.

In his short letter, he named Chief Criminal Deputy, Bruce Prejean as his successor. Prejean has 25 years experience in law enforcement and will serve the rest of Waguespack's term, which ends June 30.

"It has been an honor and privilege to serve the people of Assumption Parish for nearly 16 years," Waguespack wrote. "As I transition to the next chapter of my life, I feel this is the right time for me and my family to pursue our next opportunities.

I pray for continued success and safety of our law enforcement community. I especially pray that God continues to bless and protect the many men and women who wear the badge to protect and serve our great nation, state and parish."

There has been no word on what influenced Waguespack's apparently hasty decision.
