Author and publisher of the book "Free People of Color", Mary Gehman, spoke at last week's Rotary Club meeting. Gehman spoke about Pierre Landry, who was once a slave and became the first African American mayor in the United States. It was presented to the club members of how many slaves were free because they bought their freedom, also the heart aches of families being separated. Donaldsonville was by far the largest city of free people of color back in the 1800's. The book is on sale at the Chamber of Commerce Office, 714 Railroad Ave.
