Louisiana coronavirus cases top 50,000, death toll eclipses 3,000
Louisiana's coronavirus cases rose above 50,000 and the death toll topped 3,000 as the state crossed grim milestones Monday and the infection continued to intensify during the past 10 days.
The state health department reported 461 new cases for a total of 50,239, while 11 new deaths were recorded to raise the state's death toll to 3,004.
Hospitalizations, a key indicator in the trajectory of the virus, also spiked by 41 Monday, rising above 600 for the first time in weeks.
The number of patients on ventilators also rose by 14 Monday to 77, an increase of more than 20 percent.
Gov. John Bel Edwards has scheduled a 2:30 p.m. press conference today to discuss the trends and to announce whether he will move the state into Phase 3 Friday.
