Ascension Parish government employees to receive cost-of-living raises

Ascension Parish government employees will receive about a 1 percent to 1.8 percent cost-of-living raise this year, according to Chief Administrative Officer John Diez.

Ascension Parish Council member Alvin “Coach” Thomas represents the west side of the parish.

The announcement was made during the Ascension Parish Council meeting in Gonzales Nov. 19.

Parish administrators have said the cost-of-living increase is comparable to the parish’s school board and sheriff’s office.

Parish council member Alvin “Coach” Thomas, who represents the Donaldsonville area, pressed Diez on the matter.

Diez said the active hurricane season and COVID-19 issues caused the parish to lower the estimated percentage for the raise from as high as 5 percent. Federal funds have been notoriously slow to reach the parish, he added.

The 1.8 percent increase would equal the federal government’s estimate of the annual cost of inflation.
