Ascension Parish animal shelter slated for renovation

Ascension Parish open-intake animal shelter Cara’s House, located at 9894 Airline Hwy. in Sorrento, is set for renovation.
Ricky Compton, the parish’s director of planning and facilities, told the parish council Jan. 21 the renovation of the facility will cost $290,988.89.
Compton said the roof leaks and electrical problems were “unfathomable” and not fit for the rescued animals and shelter workers.
The parish plans to prolong the life of the facility and generate funds through the parishwide property tax in order to upgrade the animal shelter. Compton said even if the shelter moves to another location, the parish will utilize the building for other purposes.
Cara’s House provides testing, shots, medical treatment, microchipping, prevention, and spay/neuters for animals in its care.
An estimated 3,000 animals per year are cared for by the parish shelter. Donations are accepted.
Last week, the Cara’s House Facebook page had a post go viral after superimposing a photo of an adoptable pet on the famous meme photo of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders sitting at the presidential inauguration.
