Lowery Middle School student off to state spelling bee

     In Dec. 2015, students in sixth through eighth grades at Lowery Middle School competed in the preliminary rounds of the school level of the 2016 National Geographic Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society. These students participated in a preliminary competition consisting of seven rounds of oral questions in the following categories: State Savvy, U.S. Road Trip, Discover National Parks, Weird But True!, Geo Extremes, Odd One Out, and Awesome Adventures.

     Out of nearly 300 students, ten qualified for the finals. 

     The final round consisted of oral and written responses to questioning. The third-place winner was Eric White.  Brandon Daigle and Laura Gutierrez advanced to the Championship Round.

     The school winner was Brandon Daigle. Brandon has taken a qualifying test which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.  Up to 100 students from across the state of Louisiana will be selected to compete in the state bee on April 1.
