Ronnie Lopez, former Rep. Ed Pastor's close friend, talks with "The Gaggle" podcast team about the congressman's life and legacy, Nov. 30, 2018.

This week on azcentral's Arizona politics podcast "The Gaggle," hosts Yvonne Wingett Sanchez, national political reporter, and Ronald J. Hansen, national congressional delegation reporter, reflected on former Congressman Ed Pastor's life with Pastor's close friend Ronnie Lopez.

Pastor, who served Arizona in Washington for 23 years, died Nov. 27 after suffering a heart attack. He was 75.

Pastor was known for his ability to "bring home the bacon," from Washington, Lopez said. Pastor knew if he didn't fight for it, another state would, Lopez said.

Stand-out moment from Ronnie Lopez in this episode:

"He understood that there was always another vote. He understood if he was one of the voices in the street that was yelling and demanding, he'd never be at the table to be a negotiator. He was a man who understood and appreciated the art of compromise. And that in compromise, that doesn't mean shame and that doesn't mean that you're weak. He understood that we can differ on many issues that divide us, but there are many more that bring us together."
