Donaldsonville doubles up

Both the boys and girls basketball teams from Donaldsonville High School continued their winning ways this past week by claiming the championships of the Northwest Holiday Tournament. The Lady Tigers, led by tournament MVP Kendra Coleman, defeated class 5A Lafayette (15-2) in the championship game.

Slowed by a sluggish start to the championship game the Lady Tigers pulled off a hard fought 50- 42 victories against the Lady Lions. In order to reach the final game the Lady Tigers defeated 1A North Central and 2A Ville Platte. The Lady Lion man-to-man defense was no match for the Butch Little coached Lady Tigers and their motion offense. Lady Tigers Kayla Mollere and Bianca Harvey were also named to the all-tournament team. The Holiday Classic was the third tournament championship claimed by the Lady Tigers this season. With the wins, the DHS Tigers improve to 15-1 overall record heading into district play.

Head Boys Basketball Coach Greg Hill is still finding ways to motivate his teams after 36 years in the business. The Tigers faced Lake Charles based Washington-Marion of class 4A in the championship game. The Tigers managed to secure the 66 – 63 win despite a perceived size advantage by the Indians of Washington Marion. True to form, the Tigers rose to the occasion and employed their up-tempo fast-breaking style to on their way to victory. Paced by the hustle of tournament MVP, Lorenzo Collins, the Tigers came up with key stops and timely baskets. The Tigers needed to defeat for 3A Northwest and 4A Beau Chene for shot at the title. Junior point guard, Quentin Riley, was also named to the all-tournament team.

This is the third tournament title for the Tigers this season. The Tigers’ pre-district record now sits at 13-3. Both teams will are looking forward to continuing their success throughout district play and into the playoffs.
