Ascension Catholic wins big in Sulphur

Sulphur—Hannan broke open a 1-1 game with four runs in the third inning and weathered a late rally by Ascension Catholic to win the 2011 Class 1A state championship 10-4 on Saturday at the LHSAA Fast Pitch 56 state tournament.

Ascension Catholic took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Nancy Guillot but Hannan tied it up with a run in the bottom of the second.

Hannan broke broke out the big sticks in the third inning when Dallas Hebert hit a one out two-run double and Sydney Finch followed with a two-run homerun for a 5-1 lead.

Ascension Catholic got three runs back in the top of the fifth on a two-run triple by Guillot and an RBI single from Cannon Blanchard but never fully recovered from the third inning.

Finch finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Victorian St. Philip went 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI.

Lauren Oubre went 2-for-3 for Ascension Catholic with a double and a run scored.

Maddie Shelton picked up the win for Hannan with three strikeouts and one walk.

Aimee Guillot took the loss for Ascension Catholic. She allowed 10 runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.

1A semifinals

No. 10 Ascension Catholic 6, No. 11 Block 1

SULPHUR–Ascension Catholic didn't let an early 1-0 deficit get to them as they advanced to the Class 1A finals with a 6-1 win over Block on Saturday at the LHSAA Fast Pitch 56 state softball tournament in Sulphur.

Ascension Catholic will play Hannan in the 1A finals at 5 p.m.

Block's Micahla Hughes hit an RBI single with one out to score Molly Swayze to give the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead.

But the Lady Bulldogs took the lead for good in the bottom of the first when Cannon Blanchard hit a two-run single to right field to score Lauren Oubre and Natalie Landry with two outs. Blanchard was throw out at second by catcher Hughes on the play.

Aimee Guillot drove in another run for Ascension Catholic in the bottom of the fourth on a triple and courtesy runner Kaitlyn Mistretta later scored on a pass ball.

Natalie Landry and Nancy Guillot hit back-to-back singles in the fifth to give East Ascension a 6-1 lead.

Aimee Guillot scattered seven hits in the win for the Lady Bulldogs while striking out six with no walks.

Block loaded the bases in the top of the fourth but Kayla Smith lined out to shortstop Nancy Guillot who turned the double play getting Hughes out at second.

Kayla Smith took the loss for Block allowing six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
