DHS, St. Amant end with scoreless tie

Staff reports

St. Amant and Donaldsonville met in the fourth and final game of the annual Ascension jamboree Friday night in Gonzales.

In the 15-minute contest, neither team scored.

Donaldsonville suffered a key loss as standout senior Devon Breaux was sidelined due to an injury. Sophomore Leandre James stepped in for Breaux at quarterback.

The game opened with Donaldsonville's Quentin Riley breaking a long kickoff return past midfield.

After the promising start for the Tigers, Breaux went down with the injury on a third-down play. Donaldsonville was forced to punt at the 13:09 mark.

After a touchback, the Gators took over and began a drive. On fourth-and-1, Donaldsonville held and took over on downs.

Later in the game, Donaldsonville's Jaquel Grant snared an interception on a pass attempt over the middle. With 3:10 left, the Tigers threatened in St. Amant territory.

A mishandled shotgun snap set back the Tigers after they had mounted a drive into the red zone. The problem would arise again, but when it happened a second time, James improvised and gained back some of the ground.

St. Amant quarterback Tyler Guillory was able to connect on first down passes late in the game.
