Donaldsonville falls to Assumption in season opener

Staff reports

Not a good night for football with all of the wind and rain, but Assumption Mustangs came to give Donaldsonville a run for their money at Floyd Boutte Memorial Stadium on Friday night. The Mustangs dominated over the Tigers with a 27-8 win.

Known as the “Brawl on the Bayou,” Assumption walked away as the champions.

Assumption Head Coach Don Torres said, “Despite the weather, our team fought hard enough to get a victory.”

Torres also said that he was very proud of his defense and how offense came through for them.

The Mustangs gained the advantage in the first quarter after a botched punt at the 14-yard line, and DeJuawn Oliver hustled a 14-yard touchdown.

In the second quarter Jaylon Knockum for the Mustangs added another touchdown.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Tigers were able to score. The drive started with Leondre James and a one-yard touchdown pass to Jaquel Gant put the Tigers on the board.

“Our young guys made some mistake,” said Coach Terence Williams. “We just have to learn to make plays.”

Donaldsonville had 130 yards offense, and 36 yards rushing.

Assumption had 251 yards rushing and a total of 310 yards offense.

The Tigers are on the road to take on Dutchtown this Friday.
